MAP-Works®, the leading student success and retention program from EBI MAP-Works, today formally announced its three MAP-Works Scholarship award winners. Congratulations to Augustus J. Chua, University of Rhode Island class of 2015, Kandy Diaz, Lipscomb University class of 2015 and Mollie Smith, Ball State University class of 2014 on winning the MAP-Works (Making Achievement Possible) Scholarship Award.
“We are absolutely delighted that A.J. Chua of the University of Rhode Island was one of three students nationally to be awarded a scholarship. His essay reinforced the value of MAP-Works as an educational tool. As AJ stated in his essay, the results allowed him to see the value of developing relationships with faculty. He was also able to see his goals on paper and the “norming” data reinforced that they were attainable. Congratulations AJ on your academic achievements, and scholarship. Well done!” said Linda Lyons, Assistant Dean of University College at the University of Rhode Island.
The MAP-Works Scholarship is a national essay contest for first- and second-year college students who have participated in the MAP-Works program. EBI MAP-Works created this scholarship to highlight the experiences and achievements of MAP-Works students. The scholarship in the amount of $1500 will be granted to Mr. Chua, Ms. Diaz and Ms. Smith at the end of the 2011/2012 academic year with funds to be applied during the 2012/2013 academic year.
When notified of winning the scholarship, Ms. Diaz said “If MAP-Works did not exist, I would have never been able to overcome the initial obstacles of beginning college life nor tell how grateful I am for MAP-Works’ guidance and encouragement in helping me do so. In turn, I would have also never known how ecstatic, rewarded and blessed I feel to be among the honorees for MAP-Works’ gift to my education.”
Scholarship applicants were asked to submit a 800-1600 word essay which answered one of the three following
questions:
- How did MAP-Works affect your college experience?
- What did you learn from the MAP-Works student report that caused a change in your college behavior?
- Was there a person who reached out to help you who had information from MAP-Works? How did that person affect you?
The winners were selected by a panel of six judges consisting of higher education professionals from participating MAP-Works institutions and EBI MAP-Works employees. The essays submitted by the entrants were judged on style and content. The winning essays demonstrated the significance MAP-Works has had on the entrant’s college experience.
When asked why she applied for the award Mollie Smith answered, "I submitted an application for this scholarship because I feel that MAP-Works enabled me to be a more effective Resident Assistant on campus, and I wanted to tell my story of its effectiveness. Now that I am a winner of the scholarship, I am
overwhelmingly appreciative and so thankful.”
The Scholarship provided an opportunity for students to share how MAP-Works impacted their college experience. The purpose of the scholarship essay was to gain a better understanding of how students are using MAP-Works to learn more about themselves, how students were applying feedback from their student reports to change their behaviors, and how interactions with Direct-Connect faculty/staff improve their college experience. EBI MAP-Works believes this initiative will foster a deeper insight into the student experience and provide an opportunity to highlight MAP-Works students’ achievements.
