MAP-Works® Frequently Asked Questions
Will my institution be required to purchase hardware?
No. MAP-Works is a web-based system. All software is hosted and all data is stored on EBI's secured servers. While we do house the data, we also provide methods for you to download responses and export reports to portable formats.
What is the capability of this system to interface with student information systems and other advising systems?
We integrate with all ERP/SIS systems. EBI works individually with many institutions to develop an integration model based on your specific needs and requirements.
Who puts the student profile/success markers in the system?
Student profile information can be uploaded through a comma-delimited file format (CSV) or data integration (web service or FTP upload). The success markers have already been predetermined through years of research. The profile data along with student response data is evaluated using a very sophisticated algorithm to arrive at the risk indicator.
Who coordinates MAP-Works?
Each institution will determine a Campus Coordinator, Technical Administrator and Initiatives Coordinator who will collaborate with others on campus to accomplish tasks related to MAP-Works. The flexibility of the system allows institutions to determine the best strategy for success. Every campus sets up MAP-Works uniquely. On some campuses MAP-Works is coordinated through Academic Advising, on others it could be coordinated through First Year Programs or Residence Life. EBI will work with you to determine the best strategic approach to deploying MAP-Works successfully.
How are campus professionals connected with students?
MAP-Works allows you to create Direct-Connect™ relationships between faculty/staff (i.e., Advisors, FY Instructors, Hall Directors, etc.) and students.
Can other groups within our campus be connected to students (i.e., Coaches, Multicultural Staff, etc.)?
Yes. MAP-Works allows for an unlimited number of faculty/staff to be connected to students as Direct-Connects or through other associations.
Where is the personal information for students stored and is it safe?
All the personal data for students is stored on EBI's secured servers.
What information is collected in the Transition and Check-Up Surveys?
The Transition Surveys and Check-Up Surveys have evolved over the last 20 years and are all based in theory and research. We look at 20 main factor areas in our Transition Survey (3 week) and Check-Up Survey (10 week).
How long does the Transition Survey take to complete?
On average, the Transition Survey takes about 15 minutes to complete.
Do you have any two-year community colleges without a residential program that have been successful at using MAP-Works?
Yes, we have numerous commuter based campuses and two-year institutions that have successfully implemented MAP-Works.
Who are the Direct-Connects for nonresidential students?
Each campus develops a strategy before launching the program to address nonresidential student issues. This varies but they are mainly academic advisors or course instructors. EBI will work with you to determine the best approach for success with MAP-Works.
Who is EBI and what’s their role with MAP-Works?
Educational Benchmarking (EBI) is the company that owns and administers MAP-Works. EBI provides comparative assessment instruments and analyses to support improvement of program quality in many areas of higher education. In addition to MAP-Works, EBI also offers comprehensive assessments of academic programs, student affairs programs, and custom assessments tailored to the needs of educational institutions.
